"Associazione Sportiva Dilettantistica IL MISSOURI Equitazione"
On a horseback in the Buonconvento region
We walk our horses immediately into nature and follow le strade bianche or the narrow paths that sway through the fields or are hidden in the woods. The roads are lined with cypresses and by the end of June the grain ripens on the fields and the sunflowers turn clockwise. We are in the middle of Tuscany on the most beautiful hills between Siena and Montalcino and the wonderful landscape of Le Crete Senesi is just around the corner. Olive groves and vineyards alternate. On a horseback you have the best lookout over this area around Buonconvento.
The views are breathtaking and the landscape changes completely in every season: you never get bored. The trails can not really be described as a ride into the wild but are never a walk in the park. Nature is pretty friendly in this part of Italy but is is almost impossible to find a hundred meters that does not climb or fall.
We take our time, time is on our side. The guide is multilingual and would like to tell about the individuality of the region during the trip. If a ride goes a little longer than expected, so be it. At the most, il pranzo or la cena will have to wait a bit. On arrival the birra Moretti or the Aperol Spritz will taste twice as good.
Trails & rates
We plan daily trips for everyone who wants to experience a beautiful ride, for both beginners and advanced. For those who want something special we will do our utmost to organize it as good as possible. All formulas and combinations are possible but to make it easy to imagine we give 5 possibilities. So you have an idea what a trail on horseback can be and how much it will cost you.
One trip is not more beautiful than the other, they are just different. And therefore ideal for those who want to make several trips and still want plenty of variety. All rides below are suitable for both novice riders and advanced riders. We make homogeneous groups and the only difference will be that we can gallop with riders with a bit more experience. We do this anyway only where it is safe and only with riders who are firmly and confidently in the saddle.
The short journeys begin in principle at 9 am and at 4 pm. As long as the weather permits (summer heat!) we can also leave a little earlier in the afternoon. On very hot days you can also do a short ride from 6.30 am and a late night ride until dusk.
The duration of the tours is calculated at the average speed of 6 km/h for the short hikes, 4à5km/h for the day trip.
These rates apply to those who book after 1 March 2019; for those who previously made a reservation, the 2018 prices remain valid.
1. Walk of 1.5h along the valley of podere Malandrine and the borgo Serravalle.
A relatively short journey but of unprecedented beauty and ideal for novice riders. We ride for a long time over a ridge with beautiful views. In the distance we see Siena, Montalcino and of course Buonconvento, "uno dei borghi più belli d'Italia". We make a firm descent, then follow the strada bianca and return between the olive trees and the vineyard of Pieve Sprenna.
2. Walk of 1.5 hours to Casale San Andrea.
This tour is totally different in character than the previous one but certainly so beautiful, and therefore ideal for those who both want to do. We follow a path through a forest, then climb towards Montauto but bow to a majestic road lined with old cypress trees. We then take a field road in the plain of the river Arbia where riders with a bit of experience can do a quiet canter, and with some luck we do that in the middle of the sunflowers.
3. Combination trail of 2,5h.
We stay in the same area as on the shorter trails and we make a kind of combination of the two. Although we are never far from our point of departure, we cross completely different landscapes. We blijven in hetzelfde gebied als bij de kortere tochten en maken een soort van combinatie van de twee. We zijn eigenlijk nooit ver van ons vertrekpunt, maar toch doorkruisen we totaal uiteenlopende landschappen.
5. Trail of 4 hours to Montauto with caffè/aperitivo-stop in Ponte d’Arbia.
Montauto is a remarkable place, a god-forgotten place inhabited by sheep and "il pastore maremmano", the white shepherd dog from the Maremma. Desolate and rough, the terrain of the sheep farmers from Sardinia. After a short break we descend to the Arbia valley, drive towards Curiano and stop in Ponte d’Arbia for a caffè or an aperitivo. Then it is an hour's drive to our departure point, the agriturismo Pieve Sprenna.
75€/person — minimum 2 participants
6. Trail of 4 hours to Curiano with caffè/aperitivo stop in Ponte d'Arbia.
This is a combination of tours 1 and 2. We ride the first part of tour 1 but instead of returning to Pieve Sprenna we ride to Ponte d'Arbia and take a short break with coffee or a drink. We then take the via Francigena direction Curiano, continue through the plain of the Arbia and end like in trip 2. This is an ideal walk for those who want to finish a quiet tour with a smooth canter through the fields.
75 €/person - minimum 2 participants
7. Day trip of 25km with lunch in Chiusure, 5 to 6 hours in the saddle.
In the Giro d'Italia this would be called the queen ride, the journey to the roof of the world. For the afternoon we ride the largest part, about 15km. We cross the Ombrone and then climb towards the heart of the Crete Senesi. The landscape is both overwhelming and enchanting, arriving in Chiusure has something magical. In the afternoon we take a slightly shorter route that takes us through the garden of the abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore, as it were.
125 €/person, lunch included - minimum 2 participants (departure at 9.00, back at 18.00)
“To learn something new, take the path that you took yesterday”
Everywhere in the world where one 'works' with horses one rides more or less in de western way. Obviously the cowboys in America, but also los gauchos in Argentina, les gardians in the Southern French Camargue or i butteri in the Tuscan Maremma. But a horse remains a horse and a saddle remains a saddle and whoever is used to riding in the English way will have no trouble with the transfer. We ride as relaxed as possible on the loose rein; the horses have no problems with this because they are used to it.
Our western saddles have been run in and often treated with oil. They are smooth but that is not synonymous with buttery softness. But anyway, they are comfortable and are very handy to attach a raincoat of saddle bags.
To really ride in style we should wear a Stetson but for safety a rider helmet is a better choice.
For rainy days we have lang raincoats - cattleman's coats - and saddle bags to carry extra material and spare clothing.
There are 2 limitations: the minimum age is 14 years (traffic regulations Italy) and the maximum weight of the rider is 92 kg/203 lbs.
“Ain't nothing better than ridin' a fine horse into a new country”

Il Missouri is a very small-scale new project and for the time being with few horses. But let that be the advantage: the groups are small with 2, 3 or 4 riders.
The horses are trained for heavy rides and have sufficient experience with trail riding to get safely on the road. Some of our horses are what we call gaited horses: besides step, trot and canter, they have a fourth way of walking, the foxtrot or the tölt. This very fast step is comfortable for the rider because the horse's back hardly moves. For those who want to experience what it is like to ride a Rocky Mountain Horse or a Missouri Fox Trotter, this is a unique opportunity. These American breeds are called the smoothest horses on earth, without exaggeration. They also have a soft character, they are sure footed, people-oriented and very willing to work.

Agriturismo Pieve Sprenna
Obviously, the horseback riding is not only for guests of this agriturismo, but we dare to recommend this beautiful place. The horses graze just behind the garden and you can almost jump straight out of your bed into the saddle, or you can have breakfast until we come to tell you that the horses are saddled and after a late afternoon ride you can still be on time for the antipasti in the restaurant, after a quick shower. Nothing can be easier, no?
We organize a three-day horse-riding only for guest of Pieve Sprenna, and that is for practical reasons.
